Ascension Day Thursday May 9th 2024 dawned a gorgeous, bright sunny morning and we met at 8am outside the front door of All Saints' Church to sing the traditional Ascension Day Hymn, 'Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise' after which we entered the church for the service of Holy Communion.
As is All Saints' tradition, we then shared breakfast at Sandsy's Cafe, by the Post Office.
Many thanks to Revd Catherine for a beautiful service. -

Noahs Ark Easter Party 2023 (34 photos)
We had a great morning at Noah’s Ark (28/3/23)... so much happening - there was a free raffle for parents.
We had a lovely craft table where children made Easter cards; we also had an Easter Egg hunt with
prizes for children to take home. Each child had a knitted chicken with and Easter Egg inside.
Last, but not least, we had some wonderful Easter Bonnets and naturally an Easter Bonnet
Parade, a difficult decision for our judges Gail and Lis.
There were four winners:
4th Jude
3rd Louis
2nd Evie....
1st Jemima!
Each had an Easter Egg - but all children had a small Easter Egg
for taking part.
We are having a well earned rest for two weeks. Thank you so very much to everyone who
made it such a special morning!
We hope you all have a joyous and blessed Easter. -

Service of Thanksgiving for St Peter's Church (14 photos)
St Peter's Church building has now closed for worship, while regular services continue on Wednesdays and Sundays in the Church Hall at the side.
While the official transfer of responsibility for the church building occurred on Wednesday 18th January 2023, the final service marking the end of worship in the old building was held on Sunday 29th January 2023 at 10.00am.
Over 100 people were in attendance.
Revd Catherine Mitchell led a 'Service of Thanksgiving for St Peter's Church'; the preacher was Revd Doug Chaplin, Discipleship and Lay Training Officer for the Diocese of Worcester.
After Holy Communion in the Hall, as part of the Service the congregation was invited to go next door into the old church building, where there were prayers at the font, the chancel, the altar and at the back of church.
After the service, there was an opportunity to reminisce about the long history of St Peter's church building over coffee and biscuits in the Hall. -

Linda Watkins writes:
“Shall we, shan’t we?” But yes, we decided to open - we weren’t sure how many moms and toddlers would come along but as you can see from the photos we had a full house and oh! boy did everyone have a good time! We had party food and lots of different games and activities. All of our toddlers left with a goodie bag. There are five children who have moved onto nursery. We already have our youngest member Isabella who is just two weeks old signed up for September. Our thanks go to all our moms who have been wonderful, to Tony Wright and Milly who give us extra help week by week and to Lis Little and of course our regular helpers.
Have a good summer everyone, see you in September!" -

Palm Sunday 2022 All Saints' (8 photos)
Some images from the Palm Sunday procession on 10/4/22. This Palm Sunday we were very grateful to be able to celebrate in our usual fashion, starting Palm Sunday in the Church Hall. Jan Humphries our ALM blessed our palms, and we then crossed Vicar Street bearing our palms, while singing the Palm Sunday hymn "All Glory, Laud and Honour", led by our crucifer. We progressed down Dean Street, turning left up the church path by the former Court House pub and into church for the 10.30am service.

Easter Bonnet Parade 2022 (12 photos)
Noah's Ark Easter Bonnet Parade 2022 5/4/22.
We had our Easter Bonnet parade on Tuesday (5/4/22) our moms took a lot of trouble to create many lovely hats, the children and moms enjoyed showing them.
We had an Easter Egg hunt too which the children loved and there was a free raffle..... so something for the adults too.
We asked Maureen Matthews and Lis Little ( many thanks to both) to judge the bonnets, a very difficult decision - they were all wonderful, however we did have 4 prize winners but all of the children had a small Easter egg to take home.
It was a great, if chaotic, morning - but enjoyed by everyone, our thanks to all who helped to make it such a success. -

Martin Platts Final Service (3 photos)
6/3/22: Martin Platts has now left us as church organist and choirmaster, for pastures new at St Giles Rowley Regis - a church much nearer to where he lives.
At the conclusion of our Holy Communion Service on 6/3/22, he regaled us with a glorious rendition of Bach's classic Cantata and Fugue in D Minor, which made full use of our church organ's tonality and voluminous capacity.
Goodbye and good luck Martin - although we will be seeing you again for the occasional wedding at All Saints' and to continue recording our favourite hymns for digital playback. -

All Saints' Remembrance Sunday Service 2021 started at 10.15am in church. Due to Covid, the space inside was limited to 133 attendees. Most pews were allocated in advance, in association with Sedgley Royal British Legion, to designated representatives of Sedgley's uniformed organisations; and to members of the congregation of All Saints' who booked in advance.
The church service ended at approximately 10.45am, and the congregation made their way to All Saints' Gardens where the new War Memorial is located. Wreaths were laid at the foot of the obelisk by individuals and uniformed organisations.
At 11am a recording of the Last Post was played, there was a Two Minutes' Silence, ended by a recording of the Reveille. Numbers outside were not limited and many local villagers attended. -

Noah's Ark Summer Party 2019 (24 photos)
Noah’s Ark held their end of term party on Tuesday 16th July 2019, as usual there were lots of activities for the children and of course lovely party food. Each child was given a party bag to take home.
We welcomed Guy and Catherine this term - they come in alternately each month and tell the children (and adults) a short bible story which has been welcomed and enjoyed by all. Many of the children from Noah’s Ark have also attended the Good Friday and Half Term Workshops and also All Saints’ latest venture The Teddy Bears Picnic.
We said goodbye to Charlotte, Evie, Chloe, Avana and Olivia we hope they enjoy the new adventure in their lives.

Claverley Flower Festival 2019 (33 photos)
In 2019 All Saints' Claverley, well known for its annual flower festivals, chose Children's TV as the theme for their event which was held in church on the 13th, 14th and 15th July.
Martin attended the final day of the Festival and alas only had his smartphone to take pictures rather than his 35mm Canon camera, but this album will give a flavour of the variety of children's TV shows covered and the high quality of the exhibits.
All Saints' Claverley is well worth a visit in any case, given its 13th century medieval 'Good and Evil' wall frescos.
Local schools were also involved in doing project work for the show and mounting exhibition panels.
Martin met up again with Revd Gary Ward, the vicar of All Saints' Claverley - when Gary was at Holy Trinity Wordsley, Gary led his Bishop's Certificate course. -

Pancake Party 2019 (23 photos)
The Pancake Party held on Shrove Tuesday 5/3/19 at St Andrew's was a huge success in all respects. It was attended by a lot of local families and there was a range of activities to suit everyone.
It began with workshop art and craft activities based on the theme of Jesus's 40 days in the wilderness, eg making sackcloth bags and snakes; then everyone went next door to the church and collected pictures of pancake ingredients, and took part in a story with Pancake buzzwords (eg Flour!) allocated to each member of the audience, at the sound of which they had to stand up!
Then there was a team game of building a pancake pathway in the hall; and finally everyone was served a delicious pancake made by the kitchen crew. Well done to Helen Laird and the young people's team who all contributed to such a memorable day. -

Remembrance Sunday Parade 2016 (134 photos)
Sedgley Remembrance Sunday Parade 13th November 2016.
We were fortunate to enjoy bright, sunny weather again this year. This is surely Sedgley's most impressive show of community spirit - over 400 people combine to remember the sacrifice made by people from our village (and servicemen and women throughout the country) for freedom and for peace.
From 10am, organisations begin to arrive and gather together in The Walk, Sedgley - outside the ex-servicemen's club and The Crown pub. Organisations include the Scouts and Guides, Brownies and Beavers and St John Ambulance.
They are put into marching order by David Screen and Bob Hill of the Royal British Legion, and at 10.15am the march begins, proceeding down High Street towards the Bull Ring.
Police and a team of volunteers provide marshalling along the route. Roads are temporaily sectioned off to allow safe passage through the Bull Ring and up Dudley Street, wheeling right into Vicar Street. Once in Vicar Street, the procession is led into All Saints' churchyard.
Colour parties remain outside on the piazza as organisations file into church.
On the return parade, the procession back to The Walk is led by Sedgley Branch of the Royal British Legion. -

Ascension Day 2016 (19 photos)
All Saints' bells were run at 7am on the morning of Ascension Day May 5th 2016. Thank you so much to John and Sue Anderson and the Ringers.
We went up the tower with Churchwarden Keith Tomlinson at 7.30am - alas there were only 7 of us. We recited the Lord's prayer on the parapet, and sang the 1739 Ascension Day hymn 'Hail the Day that sees Him Rise' by Charles Wesley.
It was also a wonderful opportunity to view the village and surrounding countryside from a unique perspective - and thankfully the weather was outstandingly sunny.
There was then an 8am Holy Communion Service in church at All Saints' led by our Rural Dean, Colin Jones who was assisted by Jan Humphries and our altar server Len Millard.
Afterwards we went over for breakfast to Cafe Cappella in Gospel End Street. -

Noahs Ark 20th anniversary (32 photos)
Noah’s Ark Toddler group started on Tuesday 10th January 1995, after a suggestion from the Rev Peter Ashby, at Ladies Society, that he would like to start a toddler group attached to the church. Four of us decided to give it go. Linda Edwards, Jenny Lavender, Elisabeth Little and Kath Apperley, together with Audrey Russell and Eileen Sherwood helping with refreshments, with Joyce Withers and Dorothy Inett joining them a few weeks later.
When we set up, we had donations from the congregation and a loan of £100 from the PCC, which we repaid during 1995.
We opened at 9.30am. The weather was very bad and we didn’t expect anyone to come, but surprisingly a couple of Moms braved the weather. By March, we had 25 members - and at the end of the year we had 40, which we have maintained throughout our 20 years.
Over the years we had trips to the Safari Park, Hatton Park, Hoo Farm and Dudley Zoo. We have regular hotly contested Easter Bonnet Parades, Services in Church, Christmas Party with Father Christmas and end of Term Party in July. We’ve started new service at Easter and Mother’s Day over the last couple of years, with Stephen blessing the children and each child lighting a candle.
We have been successful in obtaining grants to refurbish several areas of the Church Hall. We support the Fetes, Christmas Tree Festival, numerous Charity events and raffles, to which our moms are very generous.
Our team from 1995, who have continuously helped with the group for the 20 years, are Linda Edwards and Jenny Lavender as Leaders, and Joyce Withers who has helped with refreshments and played the piano. Our other current helpers in order of length of service (we think!) are Sandra Hill, Jean and Keith Pound, Linda Watkins, Elisabeth Little, Jackie Rubery, Barbara Baker, Anne Hart, Liz Williams, Hilary Raper and Rev Canon Stephen Buckley. We have also been very fortunate to have had the help of numerous volunteers over the years.
Finally, we must also say a BIG THANK YOU to all the Moms (and the children!) who have supported us through the 20 years, and all our team at the moment – without whom it wouldn’t have been the success it is.

The 200 Club March 2015 (30 photos)
On Saturday 14th March The 200 Club held a very successful dinner and dance with entertainment from Roy Watkins on keyboard and raconteurship/witticisms from Father Stephen in the Church Hall - all to raise money for the upkeep of the Hall. Catering was provided by Lee of Sedgley's Cafe Cappella in Gospel End Street Sedgley.
Jenny Lavender writes:
The evening started with Roy playing the organ until everyone was seated at 7.30pm for the meal from Lee and the team of Café Cappella, We then had entertainment from Stephen and Martin Platt, Roy at the organ again, then the March Draw which was won by Eileen Pannell, Jean Fieldhouse, and Linda Edwards.
The raffle then took place for which we thanked everyone who had donated gifts, Stephen and Martin again and then Roy played us out for the rest of the evening.
John Baker had had a" special birthday" on the 11th March, and Geraldine got him a cake so we sang 'Happy Birthday' to him and cut the cake for everyone to have a piece. There were two other birthdays - Denise Chappell and Mike Edwards this week so they got Happy Birthday too. -

WW1 Vigil Service August 4th 2014 (24 photos)
The village held a very moving vigil and commemoration/remembrance service on Monday 4th August, the date marking the 100th anniversary of the declaration of war.
The church was completely full, with representation from Sedgley's uniformed organisations (Scouts, St John Ambulance and Royal British Legion), St Peter's Upper Gornal and St Andrew's the Straits, as well as our fellow Christian denominations (Methodist and Catholic).
The service was interspersed with readings eg 'The Glimmering Landscape' by Charles L Warr and 'Sad is not a Soldier's Word' from 'Forgotten Voices of the Great War'.
One of the most touching aspects of the service was the lighting of memorial candles by our altar servers as the names of Sedgley's fallen were read out. Not only those on the official village memorial were read, but those who were not included yet who lie in the Gospel End St cemetery, and those who are commemorated at St Andrew's Bilston St and St Chad's Catholic Church.
The Mayor of Dudley Councillor Margaret Aston attended in an official capacity along with two Sedgley Councillors, David Caunt and Michael Evans.
Mention should be made of: Rob Lavender's construction of a large sand-filled wooden cross to hold the memorial candles; Becky Hill's floral memorial by the pulpit; Bob Hill's liaison with Sedgley Royal British Legion; and Rosemary's floral displays by the official village memorial.
And thank you Father Stephen for your efforts in bringing people in the village together - making this a wonderful, fitting tribute to The Fallen. -
MU Outing SVR and Ludlow 2014 (23 photos)
Pictures from the MU outing to Severn Valley Railway and Ludlow 10th July 2014. Liz Williams said: "We had a lovely day, the weather was perfect. The train journey was great a highlight being seeing the baby elephant at the Safari Park and the beautiful hanging baskets, tubs and gardens at the stations along the way. A group of schoolchildren had dressed as evacuees for their journey which added to the authenticity of our journey.
The Farmers Market was on at Ludlow and St Laurence Church was, as always, well worth a visit.
The journey home through the beautiful countryside made one realise how lucky we are to live in this lovely corner of 'God's green and pleasant land'.

The Life Exhibition 2014 (10 photos)
The ecumenical 'Life' Exhibition made a welcome return to Sedgley in late June. It was wonderful weather and all the local primary schools' years 5 and 6 walked to Sedgley Community Church in pleasant summer sunshine (a new venue for the show) to gain an introduction to the Christian faith. Over 700 children saw the exhibition. The main innovation tis year was the replacement of the old PDA units with tablet PCs, which kept the exhibition up to date. The discrete content for each pod was activated by passing the user's tablet over the bar code.

Father Rob Licensing (20 photos)
Father Rob Licensing 12th January 2014 Geddington. Our former curate in the Gornal and Sedgley Team Ministry, Rob Parker-McGee, was installed as Priest in Charge at Geddington in Northamptonshire, near Kettering, on Sunday 12th January 2014. A large party of Gornal and Sedgley parishioners travelled to Geddington to attend his licensing ceremony. Chris and Liz Williams say: "We had a good journey with a short stop for coffee at Kettering and arrived at St. Mary Magdalene at about 2.20pm. Robert Wootton, with whom we had corresponded about the arrangements for the day, was there to welcome us and show us into the church. St Mary Magdalene is a beautiful church and we were made very welcome by the members of the congregation.
It was a surprise to see a familiar face on entering the church, that of Alan Thompson who had come with his daughter Ruth.
The service was conducted by the Bishop of Peterborough and the Archdeacon of Oakham. The patron of the benefice is Richard, Duke of Buccleuch. It was an uplifting service with good hymns and an address by the Bishop. Rob was welcomed to the parish by the Duke, the Bishop, the Dean of Peterborough Cathedral, one of the churchwardens, the head teacher of Geddington C. of E. Primary School, the local councillor and representatives of the youth organisations in the parish.
There was an amusing moment at the end of the service when Rob was led to the bell tower to toll the bell. Try as he would it took several pulls on the rope and some assistance before the bell rang.
Everyone was invited for refreshments in the school hall where we had the opportunity to speak to Duke Richard, who was very sociable, and other members of the congregation.
Despite a wet journey home we all reflected on an enjoyable day. We feel sure that Rob, Sarah, Jasmine and Thomas will be very happy in their new parish.
We arrived back in Sedgley at about 7.15pm." -
